Biodiversity

Life on the Lembung Paseser coast

Mangroves, coastal forest, coral reef and seagrass are home to 179 species of plants and animals.

migratory bird species

River

The river winds through the mangroves to the sea and links them with the former fish ponds. Fish recorded in the river and ponds include mullet, milkfish and mangrove red snapper.

Coastal forest

Coastal forest forms the transition zone between the mangroves and dry land.

Seagrass

Seagrass grows in the shallow sandy water between the beach and the reef.

Coral reef

The reef flat in front of the reserve holds hard corals of many growth forms (branching, table, encrusting, massive and mushroom corals) as well as soft corals. The corals have not yet been identified to species level.

Birds

76 bird species have been recorded, 12 of them migrants that stop over on the East Asian–Australasian Flyway. Several are protected by Indonesian law, such as the brahminy kite, great egret, terns and the Javan plover.

Other birds (61)

We do not show the names of 3 threatened bird species targeted by the songbird trade, to prevent poaching and trade.

About this data

This list comes from the reserve’s biodiversity baseline study, with field surveys in December 2025. It will keep being updated as new observations come in. We do not publish where protected animals are seen.

Species are listed by their Indonesian name where one exists, with the scientific name beside it.
